Dorothy Rooney was born on 7th June 1950 in Esh Winning, Co. Durham. At the age of 16 on leaving Durham Girls Grammar School she started Nursing Cadet training and in the same year, 1966 she met her future husband Jim O’Connor. They were married on June 13th 1970.
Dorothy had a distinguished Nursing Career. Having trained and qualified as an Orthopaedic SRN and General Nursing SRN she was awarded Gold Medal for Nursing by Durham Hospital Management Committee on 10th November 1972.
Her career continued as a Nursing Sister in various wards of Dryburn Hospital before qualifying as a State Registered Midwife and working for many years as a District Midwife. Dorothy then went on to qualify as a Geriatric Nurse before more training which enabled her to work as a District Nurse for many years.
Dorothy went on to work in continuing health care in both Durham and Derwentside districts before joining Shotley Bridge Hospital as lead nurse in this field.
Dorothy and Jim were happily married for 36 years and had 3 sons and 6 grandchildren before she passed away on 23rd September 2006 after a long battle with Breast Cancer
